WHY AREN’T MORE PEOPLE WITH LUPUS CONCERNED ABOUT ORGAN DAMAGE?

“You think it can’t be you. You think that you’re the most resilient person and will bounce back and maybe aren’t really actually paying attention to some of the signs that are present.”

“Our providers aren’t putting it into our head, and not in a fearful way of ‘This is what can happen to you,’ but in a way that gives a patient knowledge to then feel empowered to make the right changes and use the tools, you know, to try to prevent organ damage.”

WHY SHOULDN’T WE PUSH THROUGH FLARES?

“That one flare, even if it’s ‘minor,’ the way that, you know, sometimes we kind of, you know, rationalize it: ‘This is not as bad as the last one.’ Or, ‘This one didn’t put me in the hospital.’ That one flare is still a lot.”

“My most recent doctor’s visit, I switched rheumatologists. I love who I have now. I loved who I had before, but I love who I have now, and one thing she asked me was, you know, ‘Do you have, you know, how often do you have lupus flares? How often is it active?’ ‘And I was like, you know, ‘Oh, just, you know, once or twice.’ And I never thought about the idea that, you know, that one bad flare could really do some damage.”

“We have to not only give ourselves space for ourselves to be able to talk about it, but give space to others to be able to learn about it. We might be helping someone with our stories. We may be empowering someone with their stories. Might be giving someone that ‘aha’ moment of ‘I’m not crazy.’”
SHANELLE:
“I believe that lupus, itself, you know, it can be a disruptor of any plan, but that doesn’t change the fact that I need to still make sure I have a plan.”

BY THE TIME YOU’RE
DIAGNOSED WITH LUPUS,
YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE
ORGAN DAMAGE.
Every lupus flare could increase your chances of developing organ damage. Flares may cause inflammation. Over time, this inflammation can damage your skin, lungs, heart, and kidneys. And it can happen without you even knowing. Don't just push through flares.
TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR TO LEARN HOW YOU CAN LOWER YOUR RISK.
LUPUS FLARES
COULD LEAD TO END-STAGE
KIDNEY DISEASE.

“I’m a morning workout person, morning yogi, morning just get up and get moving, and it’s like I can’t physically move my limbs. And so that’s usually how I know that there’s a flare.”
SHANELLE:
“I think sometimes it catches me off guard cuz I’ll have a really good, you know, long run of not having any and then I’ll be like, ‘Why am I so tired? Oh yeah, I have lupus.’”
ON-SCREEN TEXT:
WHY DO YOU THINK SOME PEOPLE WITH LUPUS ARE IGNORING THE IMPACT FLARES COULD HAVE?
SHANELLE:
“’Now’ doesn’t always think about the future. You know, ‘now’ is thinking about, is about getting though my day. ‘Now’ is I feel good, you know. And so on one hand, it’s a great tool to not necessarily stress yourself out over having lupus cuz you’re really focused on the present and not on the negative side of what could happen. But then you also, you also miss the opportunity to be able to be proactive and to think about what do I need to be doing now.”
ON-SCREEN TEXT:
WHAT DO YOU FEEL LUPUS WARRIORS NEED TO FOCUS ON?
SHANELLE:
“Really thinking about how you can move forward in this body in the most affirming, accepting, and loving way moving forward. And that is also trying to have a life without flares, not just make your way through them.”

“My last flare-up I had gained 35lbs of fluid, just from my kidneys not functioning properly. And then I don’t know how long this was in the works, but it eventually led to me having open-heart surgery a couple of weeks ago. So, you know, it’s definitely there, and I think by using oneself as an example, or at least just sharing stories or sharing other people’s experiences, with their permission of course, like, I think you can really open people’s eyes in that capacity.”
ON-SCREEN TEXT:
HOW HAS ORGAN DAMAGE CHANGED HOW YOU TAKE ON LUPUS?
VICTORIA:
“I mean, now I think a little bit differently, and I’m being more proactive about everything in general, but I feel like there’s just a big portion of the lupus population who thinks: ‘Oh, that’ll never be me. That’s someone else.’ And, you know, I think we have to all take heed and be humble, and just realize that no, it can be me, and just stay proactive, you know, and keep up with those doctors’ appointments and listening to your body, because if you don’t, it can be, it can be really serious in so many capacities.”

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE LIVING WITH LUPUS?
VICTORIA:
“You know, you want to give yourself the best chance possible at staying resilient and living your best life, and so I think, you know, take that thought process out of your mind of ‘That will never be me’ to, ‘No, maybe it can be,’ and just stay proactive and do all of the things that you know you need to.”
