The strength you show in powering through your lupus symptoms is a feat in itself. But keep in mind, if you experience increased symptoms—even invisible ones—you’re having a flare. This may mean your disease is active and could be causing organ damage. Remember, you’re not in this battle alone. Your doctor is there to help and needs to know when symptoms are tough. It’s important to proactively partner with your doctor to monitor symptoms and reduce your long-term risk of organ damage.

Ensure that your lupus treatment plan works as hard as it can. It should be helping to reduce symptoms and control flares, but more importantly, it should be helping prevent damage to your organs. If you’re fighting symptoms more often, it may be time for you and your doctor to rethink your treatment strategy.

A flare is when you have an increase in your lupus disease activity that can be measured. During a flare, some of the symptoms you already had get worse or brand-new symptoms appear. It could be a light rash that spreads or gets darker or mouth sores that suddenly show up.
